Pop-ups can be categorised in two ways: They can either be powered by an elastic band or you can pull a tab or open a page. The first mechanism can provide the greatest impact as the effect is instantaneous and can sometimes be accompanied with a “snap!” as the shape comes together. There are limitations to this type of mechanism as the shapes which can be achieved are restricted because of having to accommodate an elastic band. There are still quite a few shapes that can be achieved including geometric shapes such as cubes, pyramids and triangles or more real world shapes including cars, lorries, pen pots or deckchairs. The Page Opening or Pop-up Book style can be very varied as there are lots of techniques which can be applied. There is much less restriction on the materials which can be used and this can lead to very intricate effects. The down side is the “impact” on the recipient is less but you don’t need a strong envelope to keep the item flat during postage or before it is handed to you at an exhibition.
